Sitting in Your Own Power: What It Really Means and How to Cultivate It
At Reiki by Sharon, I believe true healing begins with reconnecting to your inner strength and wisdom. Some people seem to carry themselves with a quiet confidence—they’re not loud, forceful, or trying to prove anything. They simply are. This is what it means to sit in your own power, and it’s something every one of us can cultivate.
What Does It Mean to Sit in Your Own Power?
Sitting in your own power means living from a place of inner authority and self-trust. It’s about knowing who you are, what you stand for, and what you need—without depending on external validation.
It’s not about dominance or control. True power is internal. It’s the ability to:
Make decisions aligned with your values—even when unpopular
Set boundaries without guilt or over-explanation
Accept both your strengths and limitations with grace
Stand firm in your truth while remaining open to growth
Trust yourself to handle whatever life brings
The Difference Between Power and Force
Many of us confuse power with force.
Force pushes, demands, and controls. It comes from fear and insecurity.
Power simply exists. It’s grounded and steady.
Think of a tree with deep roots. It bends and sways with the storm but remains firmly grounded—that’s power. Force would be the tree trying to stop the wind itself.
Signs You’re Not Sitting in Your Power
We all give our power away at times. Some signs include:
Over-explaining yourself to seek permission
People-pleasing at the expense of your own needs
Constant self-doubt and second-guessing
Tolerating disrespect or crossed boundaries
Needing validation before you can feel good about yourself
How to Reclaim Your Power
Get Clear on Your Values . Write down what matters most to you. Let these values guide your choices.
Practice Self-Trust. Start small. Make decisions without polling others. Ask yourself: What do I want?
Set and Maintain Boundaries. Boundaries are not walls—they’re guidelines. A calm “That doesn’t work for me” is powerful.
Stop Explaining Yourself. “No” is a complete sentence. Allow yourself to give fewer explanations.
Embrace Discomfort. Growth often requires facing criticism or standing alone. These moments strengthen your power.
Cultivate Self-Awareness. Journaling, meditation, or quiet reflection help you know yourself more deeply.
Take Responsibility. Recognize your agency. This isn’t self-blame—it’s stepping out of victimhood into empowerment.
The Ripple Effect of Your Power
When you sit in your power, you inspire others to do the same. Your children, friends, and community notice how you honour yourself, and they learn that they can too.
Common Misconceptions
“Sitting in my power means I have to be perfect. "No—it means embracing imperfections while still honouring your worth.
“If I’m too powerful, people won’t like me,” Some won’t. The right ones will respect your authenticity.
“It’s selfish to focus on my own power, honouring isn’t selfish. You can’t pour from an empty cup.
A Daily Practice
Sitting in your power is not a one-time achievement—it’s a daily practice.
Try this grounding exercise:
Place both feet on the floor.
Take three deep breaths.
Place your hand on your heart and say: "I trust myself. I honour my needs. I am enough.”
Let the words settle into your body.
Moving Forward
You were born with power—you don’t need to earn it, only remember it. Each day is a chance to choose yourself, trust yourself, and stand in your truth.
